Dark and photometabolism of sugars by a blue green alga: Tolypothrix tenuis.
The carbohydrate metabolism of the autotrophically grown blue-green alga, Tolypothrix tenuis, was studied. The alga respires glucose, fructose, galactose, and ribose. About 60% of the glucose consumed is converted by starved cells into a glucose polysaccharide. Glucose uptake and O(2) consumption are not inhibited by 0.01 m arsenite or by 0.005 m iodoacetamide. The distribution of (14)C in the ...
متن کاملPhosphorus-limited growth of a green alga and a blue-green alga.
The phosphorus-limited growth kinetics of the chlorophyte Scenedesmus quadricauda and the cyanophyte Synechococcus Nägeli were studied by using batch and continuous culturing techniques. The steady-state phosphate transport capability and the phosphorus storage capacity is higher in S. Nägeli than in S. quadricauda. Synechococcus Nägeli can also deplete phosphate to much lower levels than can S...
متن کاملAction Spectra for Chromatic Adaptation in Tolypothrix tenuis.
The dark synthesis of biliproteins in the blue-green alga Tolypothrix tenuis is controlled by brief light treatments. Green light potentiates synthesis of phycoerythrin and red light potentiates synthesis of phycocyanin. Red reverses the effect of green and vice versa. Action spectra for the red and green effects were obtained for the wavelength region 320 nanometers to 710 nanometers, at 10-na...
متن کاملElectron Microscope Studies on Blue-green Algae
Several species of blue-green algae were studied in thin sections with the electron microscope. Our electron micrographs confirm the view that the cell of blue-green algae is different and simpler in organization than the typical plant or animal cell. On the other hand, the general pattern of ultrastructure is the same as that found in bacteria and Streptomyces. The cell boundary is formed by a...
متن کاملMass Production of the Blue - green Alga Spirulina : An Overview
Progress has been made in the past decade in developing appropriate technology for microalgal mass cultivation. This review details basic requirements required in order to achieve high productivity and low cost of production. There is a need for a wide variety of algal species and strains that will favorably respond to the varying environmental conditions existing outdoors. Another essential re...
